The document they read first
Your statement of purpose defines your service, its regulated activities, its governance and how it operates. CQC uses it to decide whether the service is structured, viable and capable of delivering safe care.
The commonest failure is not weak writing
A weak statement of purpose delays registration, invites additional scrutiny, and sets a description of the service you then have to live up to at every inspection that follows.
The commonest failure is a statement of purpose that describes a slightly better service than the one being registered — an aspiration rather than a description.
Everything else in the pack then has to agree with a document that is not quite true, and the gap widens.
If the service has changed
And your statement of purpose has not changed since you registered, that is worth a conversation.
Ask usWhat it is
Three things, and they are all about the documents agreeing with each other.
Aligned across the pack
The statement of purpose, the policies and the application all say the same thing, because an inspector will check.
Accurate about intent
It describes what you will actually do on day one, not what you hope to do by year two.
Regulation-anchored
Written against the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 rather than a template.
What it covers, and what it does not
The documentation pack. Keeping it current is yours — it is a living document, and the version that matters is the one that describes the service today.
Fees are quoted before any work starts. Nothing on this page is an offer.
Who it is for
New registrations
Where this is the first document anybody assesses.
Providers making a variation
Where the statement of purpose has to change with it.
Existing services
Whose documentation has drifted from what actually happens.
Start with the document they read first
If the statement of purpose is right, most of the rest of the pack follows from it. If it is not, everything downstream inherits the problem.

Described, not aspired to.
