What it is for
There is no useful version of this that you enjoy. A self-inspection that feels comfortable has not been done properly.
Inspections rarely find things nobody knew about. They find things people knew about and had stopped seeing, or knew about and could not evidence. A self-inspection is the deliberate act of looking at your own service the way somebody with no loyalty to it would, and it works only if you are willing to write down what you find.
The kit gives you the structure for that: what to look at, in what order, which records to pull rather than which records to be shown, and what to ask staff so that you hear what happens rather than what the policy says. It also includes how to score it, because the temptation to mark generously is the main way this exercise fails.
Done twice a year it changes what an inspection can find. Done once, three weeks before one, it mostly tells you what you no longer have time to fix — which is still worth knowing, but it is not the point.

What it does not do
Worth saying plainly, because most people buying a kit are hoping otherwise.
It does not predict your rating. It shows you what somebody would find. What they conclude from it is a judgement, made by people, on a day, and no template forecasts that.
It does not score itself. The honesty has to be yours, and the person running it should not be the person most invested in a good result.
It does not fix anything. It produces a list. The list is only worth having if it turns into actions with owners and dates.
It is not an inspection. It has no standing with anybody, and it does not reproduce or predict any regulator's framework or methodology. It is your own management tool.
Have somebody else run it if you can — a manager from another service, a colleague, anybody who does not have to live with the answer. The single biggest limitation of self-inspection is that people cannot see the things they have stopped noticing, and that is not a failing of character. It is just what familiarity does.
